Mark has worked in clinical diagnostic mycology at the UKHSA National Mycology Reference Laboratory for 20 years and has undertaken all his professional qualifications in clinical mycology. He is a member of the editorial board for the journal, Medical Mycology (5 year Impact factor 3.91) and he has been an executive committee member of the British Society of Medical Mycology (BSMM).
Mark has taught at each of the universities in Bristol at both undergraduate and Masters level as well as provided teaching for the BSMM led MSc in Medical Mycology at the University of Exeter. He has mentored several BSc/MSc students with successful research projects in the area of clinical mycology. He has also taught at the Pasteur Institute in Paris.
As a clinical scientist, he has been involved in the treatment, management and diagnosis of fungal infections for 13 years. He has presented his research at international, national and local conferences and has published over 40 papers on clinically relevant fungal infections and treatment. His research interests include the taxonomic revision of fungi and the application of this to clinical diagnostics, the development of MALDI-TOF MS as an identification tool for fungi, and the management and treatment of fungal infection.
